Steve Ahern

Steve Ahern is an internationally recognised broadcasting and new media specialist, communications industry leader and management consultant. He is the author of several publications, including the text book Making Radio, published by Allen & Unwin.
Before founding Ahern Media & Training Pty Ltd and the International Media & Broadcasting Academy (IMBA), he was Director at the Australian Film Television & Radio School (AFTRS), a radio broadcaster and a senior executive at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
His company publishes two internationally renowned websites for the radio industry: radioinfo.com.au and AsiaRadioToday.com.
Steve is a world expert on radio and new trends in broadcasting, and has been a keynote speaker at many international conferences including Radio Days Europe, Asia Media Summit, Digital Broadcasting Summit, Radio Asia Conference and many others.
In a forty year media career Steve has helped found a number of start up companies and training institutes, and has steered the boards of media and communications companies around the world to success.
Steve was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in the 2009 Queen’s Birthday honours list for his contribution to media and training.
Recent AMT consultancies include the business restructure of the Pajhwok news service in Afghanistan, management training and mentoring for Eye Radio in Juba South Sudan, CEO and executive coaching for Australia’s National Measurement Institute, mobile journalism courses in Singapore and new media business planning for broadcasters in Malaysia, Sudan and Singapore.
Steve began his media career as a presenter, producer and announcer at various commercial and community radio stations in Australia, then joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation where he managed radio and television operations in various locations.
He was the founding consultant for South Africa’s national television, radio and new media training school (NEMISA), and Afghanistan’s Nai Media Institute (NMI). He worked with the South African Broadcasting Corporation to restructure the organisation for the new media environment and has developed training curricula for media companies in Singapore and India.
He has also worked in Teaching, International Public Relations for the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and Executive Management. Steve is a sought-after international conference speaker, with a Degree in Education, qualifications in Workplace Training and post graduate qualifications in Business Management.
Living in Sydney Australia, Steve is married to Serena and has two adult sons.
